Desoldering QFN Components Safely
Removing a QFN chip requires a delicate balance of heat application and airflow control.
Applying a Heat Sink
- Clamp a large alligator clip to the center of the component body to absorb heat.
- Use a specialized vacuum desoldering pump with a wide nozzle for fast heat extraction.
- Apply flux liberally to ensure the solder melts completely around all pins.
Controlled Airflow
- Keep the hot air gun nozzle moving constantly to avoid hot spots.
- Reduce the airflow speed once the solder becomes fluid to prevent blowing the component away.
- Stop heating immediately once the component is loose to prevent overheating the PCB substrate.
Patience and the right tools make QFN removal manageable.
